The Griddled Cheese Deluxe – with brie and goat cheeses, tomato and bacon – sounded a lot better than it really was. The Napa Valley Burger oozed with fresh goat cheese but needed extra salt. If it wasn’t for the handy caddy of spicy sauces nearby, my burger would have suffered, but a couple of squeezes of the jalapeno sauce saved it. Burger had delicious guacamole (in fact, too much guacamole) the Angus beef was cooked perfectly and was juicy, but the sandwich overall was bland. There’s a long list of milkshakes and beers, but you only get to choose between BBP red and BBP white wines. But the rest of the menu has limited choices: a grilled cheese sandwich, two salads, fries and onion rings.
Want spicy or cheesy? Want lots of extras, like ham, pickled jalapenos or watercress? There is all of that.
The eats: As the restaurant’s name suggests, there are plenty of burgers. The tables and counter are gold-flecked, and there are plenty of bright lights in the main dining area. BBP, as the restaurant bills itself on the menus, is bright and cheery, with orange and yellow as its main colors. After ordering, you get a number placard and find a bar stool or a seat at one of two long tables. To order food, you wait in line, with three oversized menus on the wall to help you. There’s a small bar area to the left, the ordering counter to the right and the main dining area straight ahead. The look: There are three sections to Bobby’s Burger Palace. If I wanted to order my own food from a counter, find a seat and get everything I ordered served to me within five minutes, I could save money by going to Burger King.
The vibe: This is totally American, kind of like a modern version of a 1950s milkshake and burger joint. Too bad I left surprised and disappointed. Knowing what I do about Flay and having a severe love for burgers, I was excited for the experience. Connecticut’s first Bobby’s Burger Palace opened July 1. His new restaurant, Bobby’s Burger Palace Mohegan Sun, is part of a chain, with others in New Jersey and New York malls. Bobby Flay is known for wonderful American-style food with Southwestern flair and great seasoning.
